Making organic compost is one of the most important things you can do for your garden and ultimately for your family. The truth is that there just is
no better form of fertilizer for your soil. We have been composting for over 20 years now on many pieces of land and the results have always been the same- much
improved growing conditions, drought resistant plants and better tasting vegetables.
It makes sense too; building up the soil in which your food is grown is
probably the most overlooked method of improving your health. What a plant draws from the air and the soil around it is what that plant eventually becomes. If you
feed your plants poisons and weed killers they may look healthy but they're not.
Nothing scares me more than pesticides. Nothing. You can't see them, for
the most part you can't smell them and you can't taste them. But when you put them in your body they are there for a long time.
I like being healthy and the
fastest way to get healthy is making organic compost for your garden.
What will you need?
· No special skills are required for making organic
compost
· No bin or container is needed either
· Co-operation from your whole family
You will also need a few containers to carry the
sometimes wet materials to your compost pile. Begin with a pile in an area of the garden that is close to the house and yard where most of your composting material
will come from.
We like to use grass clippings and kitchen scraps mainly. Did you know that the largest single crop grown in North America is not corn or
soybeans, it is grass! Think of all that lawn clippings that could go into the garden and actually do some good for your family. A great place to start.
There are
many theories on how to make the best compost but we have found that a simple system that works is to find someone who makes good compost and borrow their
system.
